Exploring the Factors That Influence an Internet User’s Ability to Correctly Identify Phishing Websites

-- Swapan Purkait

The Internet has become a very important medium of communication. Internet access is no longer limited to technical people only. All ages are now connected online, and they use Internet for conducting a wide range of business. Because of the growth of the Internet and so many users connected, collecting personal information through a phishing website is also easy for a fraudster. They use websites that look similar to those of legitimate organizations and exploit the end-user’s lack of knowledge of web browser clues and security indicators. This research study was conducted to empirically investigate the factors that influence Internet user’s ability to correctly identify phishing websites. Quantitative data was collected by simulating a phishing attack where participants were required to complete a task by signing into one of their e-mail accounts online. The impact of age, gender, education, awareness of phishing and previous encounter with phishing had on their ability to correctly identify the phishing website was measured. We found that many Internet users do not understand phishing attacks or realize how sophisticated such attacks can be. However, we found users who were victims of phishing in past did well to identify the phishing website.

Role of Website Quality in e-Governance Web Portals in India

--Jaya Iyer and R K Srivastava

Website is the most powerful media for delivering e-Government services. Citizens can easily access government information and gain greater opportunities to utilize and participate in government processes (Fang, 2002). Since Information Technology (IT) is changing rapidly, contributing to the growth of a large amount of the Internet and technological data, many governments around the world feel the necessity to change their services to the citizens effectively through the electronic standard. This has compelled the governments to restructure their working pattern from the manual system to fully automated. Online services are faster and accurate than the traditional ones. It reduces the time for traveling and waiting in the queue, and a significant cost reduction is seen when using online e-Government services. The mighty Internet plays an important role in providing the online e-Government services. Various studies have been done to determine the quality of the e-Government websites in different countries. This study aims to provide an instrument for measuring the quality dimensions of e-Government web services in the Indian scenario. In order to measure the website quality, this paper proposes nine dimensions which are identified based on a review of the literature and on the analysis of data of a pilot survey.

Application of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks on Web Logs

--Ch Sanjeev Kumar Dash, Manoj Kumar Pandia
and Satchidananda Dehuri

With the rapid growth of World Wide Web (WWW), it is very difficult for website owners to track and understand the need of the users. Hence, a semiautomatic intelligent analyzer can be used to find out the browsing patterns of a user. Moreover, the pattern which is revealed from this deluge of web access logs must be interesting, useful and understandable. With these three objectives, this paper uses a radial basis function neural network to classify the webpages based on the time of access and region of access. The experimental results obtained from this study are encouraging for further intensive research.

Web Content Mining: Issues and Challenges

-- Sankaranarayanan Deepa and Shanmugasundaram Hariharan

Mining the World Wide Web (WWW) is deemed to be a challenging and laborious task for the simple reason that the commercial search engines retrieve irrelevant information for user queries. The documents retrieved by the existing commercial search engines are enormous in nature and the document repository is populated on a day-to-day basis. As a result, it becomes a tricky and unaffordable scenario for a web surfer. The content obtained also seems to be repetitive, unrelated, or sometimes useless. Though many commercial search engines exist today, each has its own pros and cons. Each system has its own search procedure which is being analyzed by several researchers. This paper details the hierarchy of web mining and thereby provides a complete analysis of the challenges and future directions for efficient web search process.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs): The Changing Face of Banking in India

Bank Management
Information and communication technology has changed the way in which banks provide services to its customers. These days the customers are able to perform their routine banking transactions without even entering the bank premises. ATM is one such development in recent years, which provides remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the development of this self-service banking in India based on the secondary data.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is playing a very important role in the progress and advancement in almost all walks of life. The deregulated environment has provided an opportunity to restructure the means and methods of delivery of services in many areas, including the banking sector. The ICT has been a focused issue in the past two decades in Indian banking. In fact, ICTs are enabling the banks to change the way in which they are functioning. Improved customer service has become very important for the very survival and growth of banking sector in the reforms era. The technological advancements, deregulations, and intense competition due to the entry of private sector and foreign banks have altered the face of banking from one of mere intermediation to one of provider of quick, efficient and customer-friendly services. With the introduction and adoption of ICT in the banking sector, the customers are fast moving away from the traditional branch banking system to the convenient and comfort of virtual banking. The most important virtual banking services are phone banking, mobile banking, Internet banking and ATM banking. These electronic channels have enhanced the delivery of banking services accurately and efficiently to the customers. The ATMs are an important part of a bank’s alternative channel to reach the customers, to showcase products and services and to create brand awareness. This is reflected in the increase in the number of ATMs all over the world. ATM is one of the most widely used remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the growth of ATMs of different bank groups in India.
International Scenario

If ATMs are largely available over geographically dispersed areas, the benefit from using an ATM will increase as customers will be able to access their bank accounts from any geographic location. This would imply that the value of an ATM network increases with the number of available ATM locations, and the value of a bank network to a customer will be determined in part by the final network size of the banking system. The statistical information on the growth of branches and ATM network in select countries.

Indian Scenario

The financial services industry in India has witnessed a phenomenal growth, diversification and specialization since the initiation of financial sector reforms in 1991. Greater customer orientation is the only way to retain customer loyalty and withstand competition in the liberalized world. In a market-driven strategy of development, customer preference is of paramount importance in any economy. Gone are the days when customers used to come to the doorsteps of banks. Now the banks are required to chase the customers; only those banks which are customercentric and extremely focused on the needs of their clients can succeed in their business today.
